About you
Essential requirements include:
- A degree, or equivalent qualification, in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Typically 5+ years’ relevant post-graduate experience for Senior Engineer level, with greater project, commercial and leadership experience expected at Associate level.
- Strong practical design experience in one or more of the following: building structures, drainage, roads, refurbishment, inspections or flood-risk related commissions.
- Competence in common construction materials and forms, including reinforced concrete, steel, masonry and timber.
- The ability to work independently, exercise sound engineering judgement, take ownership of projects and recognise when senior review or specialist input is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain engineering matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in relevant design and drafting software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Flow, Tekla Structural Designer, TEDDS or similar.
- An organised, proactive approach and the ability to manage several live commissions within a consultancy environment.
Desirable experience
Chartered Engineer status, or active progression towards chartership with ICE or IStructE, would be advantageous.
We would also welcome experience in:
- Preparing fee proposals and managing time against project scope.
- Structural inspections, condition surveys and defect analysis.
- Client relationship management and identifying additional services.
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers.
- Working within a small or medium-sized consultancy where engineers have broad responsibility for projects.
For Associate-level candidates, we would expect demonstrable experience in areas such as workload planning, quality assurance, mentoring, business development and technical leadership.

- Technically strong, practical and solutions-focused, with an emphasis on clear, buildable engineering advice.
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of programme, scope, fees and professional risk.
- Collaborative and approachable, comfortable working as part of a close-knit team while taking ownership of their own projects.
- Confident and professional with clients, with a strong commitment to quality and client care.
- Keen to contribute to the continued development and reputation of BB Consulting Engineers.
